Women from a local quilting group that call themselves “The Loonies” have been working to make dresses for girls living in low-income families. The idea stemmed from a charity called Little Dresses for Africa. Los Gatos resident Clareen Dunivin shows off some of the finished dresses.

Wheatland, Wyoming  (read full story here)  Since 2012, Wheatland resident Julie Mills has combined her love of sewing with humanitarian efforts. Through the Little Dresses for Africa organization, as well as Britches for Boys, Mills has sewn over 200 dresses and shorts for children in Africa, the Philippines, and other countries.

Mills, whose nephew was a missionary to Africa, said that the stories she has heard from him and other humanitarian workers in the area, have driven her to sew clothing for children all over the world.  “It has always haunted me, that there are children in this world who don’t have any clothes – even the basics,” Mills said.

Women from a local quilting group that call themselves “The Loonies” have been working to make dresses for girls living in low-income families. The idea stemmed from a charity called Little Dresses for Africa. Los Gatos resident Clareen Dunivin shows off some of the finished dresses.  Members of the “Loomis Loonies” meet a couple of times a month to spend the day quilting and socializing, with the end result–beautiful quilts–most often donated to charity. But some members took up a new cause recently and have been sewing sun dresses for the Little Dresses for Africa program.

And the United Kingdom!

And, thank you to Vivian Vilela, who has managed to make over 50 dresses, even with a ‘little person’ in the house to care for! Vivian decided to go out a buy a machine just to make dresses for us – amazing! Well done Vivian, you are a star!
